I've been researching Axolotls for a few months, and was planning on setting up a tank and getting one once school is done this summer; however, my brother- and sisters-in-law decided to change my timetable and got me one for Christmas.

Because I wanted a gender-neutral name (pretty sure s/he's still a juvenile) - though mostly since I'm weird  - I decided to name him/her Doctor Who.

The Doctor came with a 5.5 gallon tank, which I felt wasn't sufficient, so I set up a 20 gallon tank with river rock and various accessories. The Doctor seems to be acclimatizing to the new surroundings relatively well.

Please pardon the crappy iPhone photos - I'll eventually take some better ones.

Ye thats tank is too small but will be okay at the moment but will out grow that quick

Pics aint coming up try again lol

:)

I see your pictures just fine. You were correct; a 5 gallon isn't sufficient. The 20long should suffice for the lifespan of Dr. Who.

Just a note: River rocks are fine as a substrate, but be aware that they do trap waste between them and need to be stirred/vacuumed thoroughly when you're doing water changes.

I figured the 20L would do. I have much bigger dreams, but a student's income, so they'll have to wait.

I have noticed that about the rocks; I may eventually lay some sand down underneath them and remove a bunch, but for now it'll (be some extra :D ) work.

Looking good so far! However on the third photo it looks like the aquarium is just over-half full. You could fill it up more.

Congrats on the new Axolotl!

Congrats on the new Axolotl!

Thanks. :D

There's 7.5 inches of water in there now - ~6 inches above the substrate - which I thought was sufficient? Should I have more than that?

I started with river rock and within 2 weeks I changed to sand. Was so worth the effort of changing over, sand is so much easier to keep clean.
The extra water will help with keeping the water fresher, especially while you have the river rock holding gunk. But the tank looks like a good size to me, obviously the larger the tank the better, but yours is definitely fine.

Oh, and congrats on the new member. Sounds like a good christmas present to me!

I've already changed to sand. :) I've got the Doctor back in the 5.5 with daily water changes while the 20L cycles.

Thanks. Hopefully he's ok - he's been having ... something odd going on (see here).

You mean 20 gallons, not litres, right? 20L is about 5 gallons.
Hope he gets better for you!

20-Long - 20 gallons, 30" x 12" x 12". And you're right: 5.5 gallons is 20.8 litres.

So I guess the Doctor is living in the 20 L while the 20-L is cycling. Hehe. :D

What a clever name! Love it! Dr. Who is adorable!!
