Okay so maybe I'm a little bias since I made this tank myself. But what can I say? This set up will only work for juvie axolotl, but at the same time it has also kept my axolotl very happy and very healthy for about a year. The water in this tank is kept at 61 degrees year round.

This is a five gallon tank in a working wine cooler. The wine cooler is just barely turned on (the lowest setting) during the winter months and then turned to '1' during the summer. Once she has reached a size where she needs to be in a larger tank I will get a square tank with a square stand and set up a sump system in the wine cooler and run the water through the wine cooler and then up into the tank to keep it cold (cheap chiller system), and hide the cooler under the stand. Or I will break down and buy a JBJ arctic nano chiller. I got Bluebell when she was about an inch long and she is pushing four-five inches now.

I had the filter out for cleaning in this shot, but I use one of those in tank Bio whispers that is run by a bubbler, it works great since it just trickles. I drilled a hole in the side of the cooler to run the air hose through.

Also a great place to keep your red wiggler worms!! They are happy in their little blue container (until they get feed)

She's the greatest little critter, eats right out of my hand and always comes to the front glass to see if it's feeding time!

I see what you did there!

Yes, Bluebell is insane spoiled! I just put a few Rosey Reds in the tank for her. It's amazing how good she is at catching them. Mmmmm....tasty fish.

I wanted an axolotl for years, but the only place in my house that I could really have one would be my reptile room, but of course being a reptile room I keep it on the warm side and I couldn't think of a way to keep the tank cool enough. Then one day when I was converting a wine cooler into an egg incubator I thought to myself...why couldn't I use this to keep a tank cold? No reason, no reason at all!!

It's also nice and dark in there like a cave.

I love the simplicity of it, and I like that it's kept dark but still visible :D I never thought of a wine cooler, what a great idea. Have you considered putting any hides in though? I know its dark and all, but I think it helps with a sense of security for the axxies ^^

What I need to find now is a wine cooler the size of a ten gallon aquarium! Giggle.

I never really thought of a hide since the whole thing is like a cave. I'll put one together with some river rocks and aquarium sealant and see if she likes it! I've been thinking of replacing the plastic plants with something more natural anyway and a rock scape with some depth would be the perfect thing! Thanks!

I'll post updated pics after I'm done. Probably take a week or so...with amphibians I really like to make sure the silicone is dry as a bone!

This is amazing.

I was looking for ideas for my dad's birthday present and stumbled across this. Then I found this thread and thought, "what an amazing axolotl home it would make". Now I just need the money... :p

Wow!! Think of the aquarium/chiller set up you could buy with that kind of bread!!!
