Of my tank is covered in pebbles, at the moment, (don't worry when I say pebbles I mean PEBBLES, each is at least an inch to 2 inches wide. They are all much bigger than Desdemona's and Othello head, my sister when she set up the tank did her research.) My axolotls seem fine with and not bothered by them at all, but I have noticed the cleaning problem (I have a siphon, but its not an easy to use bit of kit.) I also like how the pebbles look. Would it be wise to mix sand and pebbles? Leave the pebbles in place and then put sand over the top into the gaps? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

That would work fine. It won't look quite the same, but at least waste won't collect under the pebbles.

my axies would be big enough to easily swallow a one inch pebble, and probably manage to get a bigger one stuck in its mouth.

Assuming yours live long enough to get that big, why take the risk of pebbles at all, especially if you might put sand in anyway?

I have some very big river rocks nestled on sand in part of my tank. I would remove the rocks first, provided they're big enough, and place them in the sand, not just pour sand on them, but I just think it would work out neater / less spaces "missed' and generally better, aesthetically.

I would start clean, take pebbles out and then add sand. Some of the sand sifts though the rocks, gets stirred up.... but really I would just do it because if for any reason you don't like it, separating the two will not be fun.
