Aquila

I noticed your post about aquila (i think) with the white spots on gill stalks. Maybe its markings. My wildtype has silvery specks all over her body and some on the stalks too along with yellow stripes. They can have most unusual marks. Nice pics by the way, I hope they all come good for you.

All cute axies! Aquila is my personal favourite, cos of her colouring and eyes

Please excuse my missing it if you posted it elsewhere, but could you tell a little about the "rescue"? Were they mistreated or in improper enclosures? I am always excited to hear wonderful stories like this one!

They are all precious. At first, I thought Aquila's very red gills were an injury! I was glad I looked twice~

Forgive me if im wrong but all the axies look in quite good health. they are all looking well fed and in good condition.

How long have you had them?

i read about your rescue, and good for you! The man my husband rescued our tiger salamander from (sold to us as an axlotl under the name "baby dinosaur") had over 50 "baby dinosaurs" on a mall kiosk in containers with a very small amount of small gravel that held only 24 ounces of water and no cover. He fed them nothing but commercial pellets and that only a few times a week. He tried to tell us that they were from alaska and could be handled alot and could be fed entirely on the commercial pellets which he conveniently sold at his stand. The one my husband rescued started to lose his gills within 2 weeks of us getting him, and thank goodness we did some research and found this site or our "baby dinosaur" would have drowned! I'd bet 75% of the animals he sells will be dead in 3 months. A friend of ours bought a "baby dinosaur" and because she wasn't educated about tiger salamanders, hers drowned. I don't know what to do about it because the seller sells nothing else and he is either blatently ignorant or lying to get people to buy "baby dinosaurs". Should I petition to the mall to have him shut down for animal cruelty? Sorry to take over your blog

Do you not have any animal rescue authorities in America that you could contact? Or any type of trading standards authority? In the UK we have the RSPCA which will actually go and rescue and in some cases prosecute people for animal neglect and cruelty.
If it was myself i would first of all contact the mall manager and make them aware that there is an individual evidently neglecting the welfare of the livestock that he is selling with false representation. Most likely the mall manager will be looking to protect reputation first and foremost and will investigate the allegation. Also my advise on petitions, they come across very aggressive which will undoubtedly make the mall manager defensive, Perhaps it is wise to show them respect by going to them first :) Honey and vinegar etc etc. Above all Good luck.

How long have you had them?

Hi Ian, It was a week ago today i discovered them. The rear legs of the wildtypes were literally shreds of skin hanging off with fungus. If you look aquila is missing all his/her gills on one side and i mean completely gone. Phoenix was literally red all over from newt bites, it was a miracle that nothing had been bitten off. Haides had a fungal infection all over his/her gills.
On the friday i took Haides home and made sure the other three went off sale and into isolation tanks. They were all very thin and have since passed a LOT of gravel. on the tuesday i was given the other three to take home after a long weekend of trying to source who was responsible etc.
They have been fed on a mix of young earthworms (i breed myself in coconut fibre fed on potatoes in a cold environment so they stay small) and live bloodworm. For the first two days they literally didnt stop eating. So much so i have invested in an under gravel filter (under riverstones) to prevent the water fouling and trained the axies to eat out of a high sided bowl so the worms stay in one place.
The rest of them looking healthy is just a lot of care and attention. They were in a very bad way in the petshop.

Watch your undergravel filter as they can harbour a lot of waste underneath them; uneaten food etc and people have had trouble with water quality. I have two tanks, one with river stones on the bottom and the other with sand and I need to siphon the bottom and get under all the river stones at least weekly and use a turkey baster in between water changes to keep it clean. They look great, but I'm glad now I put sand in my new big tank. Waste is easy to see and they don't lose food in between the cracks. They all look good now (other than missing limbs that is ); nice markings on the wild types and nice leucistics. Haven't seen any leucistics here... wouldn't mind one.
