My new tank is not cycling correctly, so my poor 7-month leucistic has to live in this temporary plastic box. She seems to wander around a lot, and looks out. I put in one hide rock, with holes, but she seems to want to put her head under it, which worries me. I had a female anole long time ago, who, after giving birth, stuck her head under a rock, and died.

Is there any kind of plant or decor I could add to this dull little plastic box, while we wait? I thought maybe a lily pad or something with a leaf would provide a place to hide. Any suggestions?

for plants, i highly recommend elodea. it will explode in population pretty quickly, and is beautiful.

I tend to use large glass jars that are wrapped in insulating tape to black them out, I find that neither the tape or the adhesive is toxic in an aquatic environment, the jars are the 300g coffee jars or 1kg sugar jars which are ideal for adult axolotls, axolotls do have a habit of trying to dig under things, so make sure that either it isn't harmful to do so or that it is too heavy to move, because I tend to use a modified holtfreters solution most plants have a difficult time coping with it (because of the salt, although small amounts of citric acid can be used which allows the plants to tolerate the salt better), the ones that I find grow well enough in slight salinity are.. jarva moss, duck weed, dwarf sagittaria, amazon sword will grow but very slowly, also be aware that if the plants aren't secure then axolotls do have a habit of up rooting them, also be careful with moss balls as they can give of the appearance of being healthy but they sometimes rot from the inside outwards.
