Im a first time owner of axolotls, i have 2 juveniles and they seem to be doing great (eats alot, exhibits normal behavior). My only concern is my temperature hovers around or close to at 74 degrees if i dont intervene and add frozen water bottles. i was wondering if blowing a fan towards the backside of the tank will decrease the temperature ( not across the surface of the water because i have a glass lid and im afraid if i leave my tank lidless my axolotls will jump out).

No, blowing air across the back side of the tank would only cool it if the air were cooler than the water in the tank. And if the air is cooler than the water in the tank, then you can probably eliminate some heat sources from the tank instead.

I keep my water a few inches below the top of the tank so that I can use a fan to cool the water. Other people use a mesh cover (like for a reptile tank) and blow the air down through the mesh. The mesh cover is the safer method.

Good luck!

Axolotls will not jump out, I promise, Unless there are live fish to chase. evaporation from blowing a fan across the top of the water is the best way. Just don't fill the tank up super high and you should be good ?

Thanks for the replies, i will definitely go lidless and try the fan method

They absolutely can jump out if the water level is close to the top. It only makes sense to have the water as high as is feasible, since more water volume means better overall water quality. So the easiest solution is to have the water plenty high and a screen lid to ensure that they can't jump out. There was a guy on Facebook that I know of who had one jump out and die.

It's very possible! But super unlikely. If your going to be super ultra safe I agree go with the screen lid but I go lidless with no problems

Update: my temperature now sits steady at 72( havent had a chance to buy a fan yet), my golden albino gills has always had a distinct curled forward since iv gotten him( i thought it was kinda normal since i saw a post stating a lot of juveniles gills curl forward often). iv notice ever since taking my lid off my golden albinos gill has a significantly less of a curl and he seems to be more active then usual along with his tank mate.
