This might be a stupid question to ask, but why do axolotls prefer cold temperatures?
They originate from mexico after all, and from what I've heard, they live in shallow streams as well as lakes, which would further increase temperatures.

I've read that axolotls can live in a variety of temperatures in nature.

Is this some sort of adaptation after years in captivity?

And don't worry, my axolotls are happy in their cool water :)

I keep my new borns at 22 degrees Celsius.

Axolotl originate from two high altitude lakes, Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. The water would be nice and cold.

What part of nz you live in? My axolotls including the new borns are kept in my tanks in the carport. This experiences all the outside temperature changes throughout the year. From 25 c in summer to -5 in winter. All are very healthy and the young are fine even during the spring frosts we have here in nz. Ergo , I have found no need for keeping the tank at constant temp whilst rearing young. The same applied to my fire bellies when I used to raise them also.
