I am looking for feedback on the subject of preferred temperatures for larval and juvenile Cynops cyanurus / chenggongensis For simplicity I will call them C.c., with the understanding that we often don't know which species we are dealing with. I do not want to get into the whole topic of species identification of these animals, as this topic has been discussed previously. I am trying to write a caresheet for this species complex for Caudata Culture.

Based on my experience with one "strain" of C.c., I believe that the larvae and metamorphs need to be kept relatively warm. Mine do very poorly unless I keep them above 67F (19C). I have raised them several times, and this has been consistently true. Now when I raise larvae, I always use a heater to keep the larvae/juveniles in the range of 68-70F (20-21C). In contrast, the adults seem to do fine at about 60F (15.5C) in winter, no problem.

If I write this in a caresheet, am I likely to have a lot of disagreement from other breeders? Has anyone had great success raising the young ones in cold conditions?

I start having issues at around 64-65F. It's like clockwork, once they've been at this temp for a few days (right around the day 3 mark) I start noticing problems.

I had my C. cyanurus (yunnanensis) at 8-12C during winter. Almost the whole group died. The breeder where I got them from keeps them also at those temperatures with succes. I will not keep them cooler than 12C in future.

I also raise some larvae of the so called C. chenggongensis, which I kept at 14-15C. Now it's getting warmer (16-17C), and they are doing very well.

I raise some of my C.c.larvae outside in a barrel. They seem to be able to take cooler temps outside if the cold spell doesn't last to long. Inside I keep most of my C.c. in what I call my warm room. In the summer time temps occasionally approach 80F.

Thank you for the input, all.

My C. cyanurus (yunnanensis?) layed 2 tertile eggs by 14-15C. Those 2 are also developing by these temperatures. Unfortunataly I haven't seen more eggs. May-be if the temp. will get higher?

No problem with adults in my experience. I kept my adults at temps of 58-63 in the basement with no issues.

Last year I had 30 eggs of the cyranus. Lost roughly 50% of the larvae in the first 14 days. They were kept upstairs at temps between 73-75. I do not have enough data to attribute the losses to temperature. I attribute most of my losses due to my own errors. After 4 weeks they were moved back to the basement and were kept at a temperature between 66-68 with zero losses.

Jen, my adults got down to 4C (39F) this past winter for a few weeks and they came through just fine.
