I've used this setup in the past for my notophthalmus. However, they are so small, you hardly ever see them in this big a setup. I decided to put the taricha in here and haven't regretted it for an instant. They're very outgoing, nearly always hog the front of the setup, and enjoy the land area.
The setup currently houses 7 Taricha, one more will be added as soon as it starts to eat reliably.
I use a partial lid to cover the corners as the long sides have a glass strip near the top which prevents escape.
The prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura) has exceeded my expectations as a terrarium plant. It does great in low light conditions. It grows in the soil of the land part and hangs over the edge. It is a very decorative plant. The large leaves provide great shelter but at the same time makes searching for a newt easy.
The coconut shelter:
Used almost every day by 1 to 3 newts.
The small pool on the land bridge:
All parts of the setup are used by the newts, I even find them in the small pool occasionally.
