Well, I have been mezmorized by my newt, And through observing constantly, I found that His middle toe on his back right foot is cut in half! It looks as if a little bone is showing, there is a white protrusion...Should I treat it? He cae fro a tank that houses any fish, snails and a japanese newt, (not a firebelly, Im looking in to what species it is) It looks very happy and is lively and active, I understand it will grow back, how long should that take??
He is loving the large and small duckweed, and "hops" out of the water all the time. I am sooo in love! My 2 year old son also likes sitting with mum and watching it!

It'll probably heal just fine on its own. Just keep an eye on it, if it gets fuzzy or moldy looking you'll need to treat it, but if not, it'll just grow back.

thanks for the info,
and its not fuzzy or moldy, so phew....I'll keep a close eye

Hi Kara,

Could you get a photograph of the foot? I (and quite possibly many of the readers) are hesitant to suggest quarantine because you say "looks like a little bone is showing."

If the newt is eating well and there is no visible fungus, it might be best leaving it in the tank for the time being.

Hope it gets better soon!

Are you saying it is in a tank with fish right now? If so, I'd remove it. Dunno what kind of fish but many fish IME will pick at a wound on a newt, often making it worse.

Joseph, I think she meant that it was in with fish at the pet shop, before she brought it home.

It is housed alone in a 25 gallon tank...no tank buddies of the same or different species...I will be taking photos...He (or she?) is eating wonderfully...(had two big mealworms for dinner last night) and is putting on weight. Cannot see hip bones protruding now...the toe looks uch better, there isnt anything protruding, and it looks as if the skin has grown over it, it just looks a little stumpy now. I dont think i am worried anymore, it seems to be doing fine...will upload pics asap though to be on the safe side. Thanks!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
