Hello everyone!

I recently purchased 5 rough skinned newts and, while I won’t be attempting breeding for quite some time, I would like to be able to prepare in advance. So my question is, what seems to be the formula for breeding rough skinneds?

You have to get them cold. Not talking like 60 degrees basement cold, but real cold. 40F works good. You're going to need a chiller, or an unfinished basement in Minnesota left unheated in the winter. Cold.

Mine are breeding. They got cold in my insulated basement. I insulated the furnace and heat ducts so the basement doesn't warm up to much. They got down to the 50's but didn't get down to 40F.

I have a great unfinished basement lol. In the highest heat of the summer, my basement is 67 degrees. In the winter, the coldest area is 40, but the warmest is 60, and I have almost complete freedom to move tanks within this area to achieve the right temperature.

Michael, did you change their setup at all? I have heard some accounts Of people moving them from terrestrial setups to aquatic ones to breed, but my preference would be to just keep them in their normal semi aquatic setup and just cool them down.

Ugh this is embarrassing - They were sold to me as T. Granulosa, but as I look at them more, they appear to be torosa, california newts. They do however spend about half their time in land and about half in water, but I think their eyes protrude from their head. With that said is breeding torosa similar to granulosa?

I keep my granulosa mostly aquatic. I believe torosa would be mostly terrestrial except for breeding.

Ok thank you. I have my 40 breeder divided mostly half and half and have read that torosas have more terrestrial tendencies. I will have to start a new thread on specifically torosa. Thank you for all your help, though

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
