I have a problem with the levels coming straight out of my tap, ph 7.5, ammonia 1.0-2.0ppm, nitrite anywhere from 1.0-5.0ppm, and nitrate 40-160ppm. My wife and I are trying to get this solved, Are thinking of getting a RO/DO unit but I hear it is dangers to axololts and thought of doing 50/50 on ro/do and tap or ro/do and use Kent R/O Right or Seachem Replenish. Anythoughts?

Thanks Kevin

R/O + electrolytes is probably your safest bet, I use Seachem Equilibrium in my tanks, Replenish seems to be about the same mix of salts but in liquid form (you might want to compare cost per dosage).
Another option is to get the ingredients to make your own Holtfreter's solution: Here's 2 ratios I found

"Modified 40% Holtfreter's Solution: in 44 gallons H2O (Indiana University Axolotl Colony)
KCl (Potassium Chloride) 1 teaspoon
CaCl2 (Calcium Chloride) 2.5 teaspoons
MgSO4 x 7H2O (Hydrated Magnesium Sulfate) 2 tablespoons
NaCl (Sodium Chloride) 240 cubic centimeters (dry volume)

Modified Holtfreter’s 40% )per liter)

NaCl……………...1.38g
KCl………………. 0.02g
CaCl2……………. 0.04g
MgCl……………...0.08g
NaHCO3.....…......0.08g

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail. I also asked this as an actual question in a thread in case anyone wants to answer it there instead of here
