I got a 2ft tank that i want to setup for an axololt or a newt community. But im not having much luck into letting the parents letting me keep it
But anyway, ive measured up and know where id want it. Theres a cabinet under my tv in the room thats like 22 inches. The tank sticks over the edges by an inch on each side. Ive got the polysterene sheets to put under the tank to even it out but was wondering if its alright to have the tank hanging over the edge by a lil bit?

you could get a piece of wood cut to suit the size of the tank then stand the tank on it and of coarse the polystyrene.

No, it's not OK for the tank to stick over the edge. Water is incredibly heavy, and not having the ends of the tank supported puts strain on the tank, which could result in breakage.

What about just putting it on the floor? It's cooler that way too.

Good idea :D Ill ask my parents about that. WHat if i went to my woodwork department at school, said my problem, tell them the measurements of the tank and desk, and see if i can build some things to stick out on the ends so i can nail them on so the tank will be on an even surface! :p

the cheapest, best thing I have found to use as tank supports is old coffee tables from flea markets. The more scratched up they are, the cheaper! You can sand them, or repaint them, or cover them with nice fabric, or that mack-tack stuff.
The old heavy real wood coffee tables are the best, they can withstand the water weight. I was lucky and found an octagon shaped one to fit my octogon tank. Sometimes you can find them with drawers and compartments for all your accessories, food, nets, etc.
Hope this helps!

Just a couple of things to be careful about... Wood that can warp (such as regular pine lumber, for example) isn't good. Particle board is even worse, as it expands if you get water on it. If looking at tables, make sure it can support the weight of a person sitting on it; if not, it's not strong enough for an aquarium.

Here is a web site that gives the full weights of various aquariums (see "technical information" link):

A full 55-gallon tank, for example, weighs over 600 pounds!

What about going to a local B&Q they could cut you a bit of MDF to the size of your tank... would that do?

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
