Hi all,

I had a 45litre tank that Sunny has been living in happily for the last month and a half. He can walk around easily and is always happy. My question is, will this be big enough for when he gets older? If so when do you think he will need an upgrade? He is currently around about 7 inches.

Thanks in advance,
Blaze

What are the dimensions? a 2 foot tank is what I have been recommended for one adult axolotl.

At the very least it will need to be no shorter than 45cm (roughly 18 inches) in length, but bigger is always better.

The surface is ok. It´s quite short though. I personally would be inclined to upgrading it to a 60l standard tank at the very least, which is the same surface, but substantially taller, gaining quite a lot of volume that the axolotl will apreciate and you too since maintaining water quality would be easier.

I think it's hard to judge when you havn't seen the tank in real life haha, so well done to you guys. I will be ungrading sometime, but for the time being, Sunny only swims a bit and seems happy being in this tank, but at some stage I'll buy him a nice new tank.

Thank you everyone!

OK, so I found this 15inch wide, 3 foot long and 18inch high, brand spanking new tank for $54 :O

Do you think this will be good? I won't fill it up all the way, and this size is the maximum I can have for the space we have. I know it may not last him all his life, but for the next few years, he could live happily in it.

I am getting it (if everyone thinks its suitable) in 3 weeks (paying for it in 2).

I ahve plans for this tank hehe. I might try to have a real plant, to see how that works, buy him a new hide, hes outgrown his old. Maybe some new other ornaments.

Veyr excited hehe.

The tank should be the perfect size for your axolotl. If you decide to go the live plant route you should give elodea a shot, it does really well for me in cold dim conditions.

Thanks heaps =]

In the last month hes grown 2 inchs :O
I'm not sure how common elodea is over here though? I'll look around!
Will it be ok when he reaches full size? or will I have to upgrade again?

With the hides, I'm having trouble finding ones that will be suitable, that he won't go in and hide forever and we'll never see him again. If where he is, isn't bright enough to hurt him, and is covered over when the dining room light is on, does he need a hide? in other words, how sensitive are those little beady eyes of theirs =]

Thanks heaps
Blaze
(Will keep you updated on the tank, but it may be a while since I'm having surgery near to when we pick it up).

A 3 foot long tank is enough space for 2 adult axies...so Sunny should be very happy with the upgrade.

I would have to say that hides are very important for an axolotl setup. But I don't think you need to worry about never seeing him again...axies are very personable and are usually more than willing to poke their heads up when they think it's feeding time

haha, I still think he'll hide forever.

I found this PERFECT ornament. It's big and has holes through it for him to climb through =]

I bought an elodea (half dead *rollseyes*) to see if plants are going to work for me. What I wanna know is, is this plant going to pull through? Leaves are falling off it and it's dull. Do you think it will live or die? I'm hoping I can pull it through as Sunny loves it. It came with a piece of metal tied around all the stems, should this be removed? or wait until it grows roots first?

I CANNOT wait to go pick up the tank and start designing it for my little Sunny =]

Elodea is a good choice for axolotls.

If the elodea is half dead though, in order to give it a chance to grow strong, I would suggest establishing it in a seperate container to the axolotl.

Axolotls can be quite 'rough' with plants - and in his enthusiasm, Sunny may smash it to pieces with his antics before it can develop strong shoots ;).

If the plant is dying, this could also create water quality issues. Dead and rotting matter contribute to an increase in ammonia levels.

I tend to remove the metal ties, and replace them with a loose elastic band/fishing wire/plastic tie - any tie that is 'aquarium friendly' (ie. won't rust, corrode, etc).

Oh thank you Jacquie!

I ahve limited things to put it in though. What do you suggest? Putting it outside for some light during the day? or I can put it in a room that doesn't have light with just a normal light over it? but that has to be in a dark coloured bucket? Is that okay =]

Thanks sooo much
Blaze

Getting the new tank on sunday, YAY. I am so excited, Sunny will have to wait for his ornament unfortunetly =]

I left the plant in for another two days to see how it went and it's looking greener and happyer =]

Hello everyone,
Just chucked the plant, it made Sunny VERY stressed.

On a better note, I've just finished setting the tank up etc and Sunny is currently happy exploring it =] It's HUGEEEE

The current tank I have which I once kept fish and a turtle before is 30inX12inX12in which is 76.2cmX30.48cmX30.48cm... Does that sound decent? Is there a problem with have housed other animals before?

Sorry to post a question when I should be posting answers.
