im giving them a new much larger home and im going to use sand instead of pebbles
what kind of sand is best to use?

any replies appreciated !

Hello, I would recomend any kind of fine sand, as long as its 'play sand' as its sometimes called. This simply means it won't add salt to your tank unlike marine sand. As you probably know, make sure to clean the sand thoroughly before putting it in. You can get the 'play sand' from most garden centers or 'B and Q' type places. Good luck with your tank.

you can get aquarium sand from most aquatic shops, usually stocked alongside the gravel. you can also use childrens playsand (I read that somewhere on here I think) which is usually pale and soft, which ever you get thoroughly wash it first.
DON'T use normal builders sand, it's a nasty yellow that clouds the water and can containing sharp stones or small gravel that the Axie may eat.

:D

hi.
if you get the b and q type play sand. try running it through a sive, as i found some really sharp bits. almost small gravel sized. but it was really pointy and sharp.
it needed loads of cleaning as well.
looked more like they just scoped it off the beach.
its fine now tho.:p

I used my leftover sand for filling plant pots, holes in the driveway, filling other tanks, and STILL had at least 5 pounds left over. But can't beat 50 pounds of sand for $7.

it's okay

sand (I've found) is a great substrate. It's fine, easy to deal with aquatically, and looks great. I've got my four axies in a 55 gallon with large rocks, fake plants, 2 filters, an air stone, and Black Desert sand as the substrate. The only thing about using this type of sand (it's the stuff you buy at any pet store for reptiles) is that you'll have to thoroughly rinse the sand out to get rid of all the dirt, and the sand that will just floate up. It does look nice though. And I don't believe that the axies have any problem with it, they got down to mating as soon as I got them...
