I'm moving into a bigger flat next month, so starting to think about rehousing some of my pets. I currently have a wildtype axolotl who's about 5.5inches living in a 3ft x 1ft tank. I've been raising some babies who are around 6cm now and living in individual tubs. I've decided to keep 2 of the babies and the rest will be rehomed over the next few months. I was originally planning to buy another 3ft tank and keep the babies in there until all 3 axies are a similar size. Then reassess things and see whether it's possible to eventually keep all 3 together.

However, I've been lucky enough to be given a 4ft x 1ft tank, so I'm now trying to decide the best way to house my axolotls. At the moment I'm thinking of keeping the bigger wildtype on his/her own in the 3ft tank and using the 4ft tank for my 2 babies (obviously I'll need to wait until they're a bit bigger and past the cannibalistic stage before putting them together). As I understand it 10cm is roughly the sort of size when the risk of cannibalism reduces, anyone know if that's true? I'm just wondering if at 10cm it would still be wise to put a divider in the 4ft, or if that's plenty of space for them to avoid nipping at each other? The alternative would be to move the wildtype into the 4ft tank and have the 2 babies in the 3ft. Just wondering what you experienced folk would do..?

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

I'd put the adult in the 4ft, and the 2 babies in the 3ft with a divider. Since the babies are so small they don't need as much space as the adult. And he/she will enjoy being spoilt! :)

When my babies are bigger (have back legs so probably 4cm long) I am going to have 4 in a 2ft, then when big enough I will add 3 to my 6 square foot tank (divided from my adults), and leave 1 in the 2ft. :)

Hope that makes sense. :)
