I'm currently in the process of researching supplies for a future axolotl tank. I have a 40g breeder that I wish to house at least 3 axolotls. As a filter, I plan on purchasing a Fluval 206 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005QRDDM4/). I have one for my fish aquarium and really like it.
Looking around, I've read axolotls's water should be less than 70F. I live in Wisconsin, and the temperatures fluctuate like crazy. I don't have the 40g set up yet, but I have a couple of gallons of water sitting around for my fish tank, and those are about 74F. (I'm sure it can be hotter on warmer days)
If needed, I am willing to purchase a tank chiller. I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but the Active Aqua Chiller, 1/10 HP (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0048IVBT4/) seems somewhat reasonable. Are tank chillers effective? Worth the money? Is it actually necessary?
Also, it seems like you need a pump for the chiller to work. Would hooking it directly to the canister filter work? Basically:
Tank >Input Tube> Filter >Output Tube> Chiller >Output Tube> Tank
Or would I have to buy another pump?
Are there any cheaper methods to cooling down a tank? I don't really want to do a DIY project because I'll mess up. I also know about freezing water bottles, but that seems really tedious. Would fans be efficient enough to cool down the tank, or are those more for smaller setups?
