I am currently looking into setting up my first lotl tank. I am looking at what to put into the bottom and was wondering what you guys were using for your bottoms and what suggestions you have. I read that some people just leave the bottom bare but that this can stress out a lotl I am poor so any ideas will help.

I use sand so if the axies eat it(which they will) it will pass thru without problems. You can use big river rocks(that are bigger than the axies head) but I have read that they can be hard to clean between.

Ok I think I will do that. does it matter what kind of sand I use? Is normal play sand alright? I was also thinking of using some tile that was left over from a project for the kitchen backdrop but I dont remember if there was any left over.

play sand is fine....make sure you rinse it really well and then rinse it some more. Tiles are ok as well, there are lots of people that use tiles for their tank. Have a look around in peoples albums and you will get some great ideas.

make sure the tiles dont have any anti mold/fungal coatings if you do use it. Thats not good for axolotls

I used large river rocks I got from a garden supplier (it is inert). Yes, they are hard to clean, I'm thinking about getting some sand to fill in the gaps.

Make sure to post pictures when your done!
