T. granulosa eggs

Well all, my T. granulosa are now laying eggs. I count two eggs right now in the tank as of this morning that weren't there last night when I went to bed. One of the males is going on an amplexing frenzy though...the base of the plants, the thermometer and the air pump filter hose are all just some of the things he's trying for!

I'm pretty pumped about it.

Yeah! I just saw one of mine doing that this morning, he was riding the back of my other one for quite a while, the other one just kinda sat around and swam, but i don't know if the second is a male or female, would he ride another male?

I've heard they will try to amplex with anything..so I would expect they would do it to other males.

Kaysie, pet store granulosa only come from cali, so you were correct.

Hi Aaron,

is this true that the pet store granulosa come from Cal? Why? I always thought they come from more northe like Oregon or even Canada.

Uwe

Uwe,

Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, make no provision for the commercial collecting of native amphibians. It is strictly illegal. Only California provides permits for commercial collecting to pet dealers and biological supply companies. I've spoken to all 4 state agencies before by phone and confirmed this.

I have not confirmed this about British Columbia, but have spoken with a few Canadian importer/exporters and they BC does not allow commercial collecting either.

Nate,

does this mean, that in Pet Trade T.granulosa as well as T.torosa (I assume not sierrae) are sold? And maybe even in one aquarium?

Uwe

Uwe, sometimes you can find torosa or sierrae in pet stores with granulosa, but this is very rare. I have never seen any Taricha other than granulosa in a pet shop.

Uwe,

T. granulosa are by far the most common (I'd guess 99%) Taricha captured and sold for the trade but like Aaron mentions, torosa do in fact get sold as well. I'm guessing that Taricha are usually collected from areas of northern CA outside the range of T. torosa. I've never seen nor heard of T. t. sierrae being sold.
