I’ve been trying to find some information on hibernation in Triturus dobrogicus after someone on FB suggested I try it with my trio.
From what I know so far, I’ll have to use a mini fridge and keep them in a small Tupperware container with ventilation, an inch or two of slightly dampened substrate, and a small water dish. I was suggested temps of 40 degrees Fahrenheit for 8-10 weeks, though from some sources I’ve seen, I could go as high as 50 degrees for 6 weeks.
The tricky part of this to me is that I bought mine as fully aquatic individuals that I was told could be housed fully aquatic year-round. I believe this suggestion of hibernation came up since I am looking to potentially breed them in the next few years, and really want my male’s breeding dress to come in. Point being: Is hibernation worth the risk and stress, and should I go through with it? If so, how should I go about doing it?
Thanks!
