Hey guys,

So I finally got my aquaclear 110 to replace my old Penguin 350B.

I am wondering what would be the best way to switch out the filters without killing off all the bacteria? I read online that you can put the filter media from one filter to the other. However in my case this is not possible, because the penguin uses cartridges with a solid plastic backing that don't fit into the aquaclear.

I do have some sponges tied onto the output of the previous Penguin filter that might have some bacteria on them too. I was using the sponges to diffuse the flow. I could possible stick those into the aquaclear, would that help?

The other option I was thinking of was running the filters in parallel, but I'm not sure for how long I should do this to make sure my ammonia doesn't spike

The tank is a 36 gallon, sand substrate and a couple of live plants in it

Any advice is appreciated

Thank you in advance

Running them together for a week or so works. If the media fits just toss in some from the old filter into the new one, that's usually good enough. Use the sponges if you cant get the media in and run both for a few days. If your tank isn't overstocked you probably wont have an issue if you just toss on the new filter and get rid of the old but its always a better idea to try and prime the new filter with bacteria.
