Swelling

Martha seems to have developed swelling at the corners of her mouth. So much so it looks as though its threatening to limit her opening her mouth.

Her appetite seems to be OK. I'm just worried its something I've fed her. I usually give her a bit of what I'm having for dinner- chicken, lamb etc etc just to give her a break from her pellets.

Brent - You should probably avoid feeding Martha chicken because of salmonella, and lamb because it is too fatty.

Axolotls have a hard time digesting mammal meat, it should be only fed as a treat if ever. If you feel you must feed mammal meat your best bet may be beef heart or liver but only in tiny thin pieces.

Try feeding earth worms instead of what you are having for dinner.

Does Martha have swelling around her jaw or throat area? Or is she only swollen at the corners of her mouth? Are there any sores or redness? Any white fuzzy material? Are her gills curling forward?

What are the tank conditions like? Have you tested the water for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? What is the temp?

If you could post a picture that would be helpful too. I would also ask how old she is?

Hey guys, thanks for your tips.

Cynthia, The swelling Martha has seems to resemble your Axalotl's (or the one in your photo).Kinda puffy cheeks and under the eyes. So maybe I'm over reacting

I'll watch what I feed her too. I just want to give her a bit of variety. Is fish OK ie- Nile Perch, salmon etc?

Brent - The axolotl in my photo doesn't have a swollen face that is just the way she looks

Boneless thin small strips of fish are ok on occasion. Do you feed night crawlers at all?

Is a night crawler an earthworm? If so no.

She doesn't seem to like live food- except for guppies.

Nightcrawlers are large earthworms generally used for fishing. Guppues aren't exactly the greatest live food, as they are big disease carriers, unless you have bred them yourself from clean stock.
