I have the Tetra Internal Whisper Filter; love it! Works wonderful and is quiet as long as there is water for it to suck up. What I'm fandangled about is how to prevent the intake slot from catching Nate's tail.

At the moment, I'm using a Small World Internal Filter. I love it even more cause it's both a charcoal filter AND acts as a bubble stone. Don't use it in shallow water though; the plip-plip of popping bubbles is the same as having a bird pecking at a window. But the racket from the pump is the most annoying and at times it sounds as if all the water is gushing out--like when you pour a bottled tea into a cup. Puts me in a panic every time I hear it gurgle.

Suggestions? Ideas? Brownies? :D

The Small World filter doesn't really do much filtering. I'd suggest switching to just an airstone. You'll still have the hum of the pump, but no gurgling. If the tank has a screen lid, you might not even need this. I have several tanks with no filter or airstone at all.

If you like having carbon in the tank, I'd suggest putting some carbon in a section of nylon hosiery and keep it in the tank. You can hide it in an ornament or behind a rock.
