Sudden Newt Death

I found one of my four little eastern newts dead this morning

It was completely unexpected and he looked just fine - he was a little darker and smaller than the rest, but seemed healthy, aside from weekly excursions into the filter (he attempted escape often). I'm wondering if anyone knows what might have caused this - I will change the water today, but if there's anything else I can do to help, I want to make sure I do it!

Ya mine tries to get away too. I found him in the filter one morning. Now I have a tepaware cover over the filter.

I have found eastern newts to be a frustration. I had some that lived for many years, but I've obtained others that just died off for no apparent reason. Sorry to hear about yours.
