I read somewhere that the first batch of axolotl eggs are mostly unfertilised. Is this correct?

Out of the ~900 eggs my leucistic recently laid (her first batch), more than 750 were viable. I'm not sure how "normal" this is, though.

My eggs started the "fold" stage 15 changes last night. Maybe 5 out of 640 eggs. Now after 8 hours 1/3 or 1/2 are there, and I'm sure more to follow.

No. A whole batch of infertile eggs is rare, even for a first-time female. First-time eggs may be smaller and harder to raise (less robust and healthy) compared to later batches.

In my first batch, there were two "twin" sets, but in one of them, the second egg broke, and the one left is smaller than most others:

Other's seem to be a good size:

Many thanks everyone! I asked because my golden albino Axol laid about 300 eggs on the 24th Nov but only a 1/3 have begun to develop into a distinct 'curl'. As it's 'our' first time I'm unsure if the remainder are viable. Should I expect to have seen changes by now? Also when posting in sample bottles, should I leave an air gap?

I'm on Day 5, and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the 640 look like that stage 16 above. I'm sure more are at that point now. You're on day 8? I think they should be well onto looking like little "C"s by now.

Yes, my thoughts too. These ones were laid directly on the substrate and are mingled with black sand. Oddly enough the others which developed well were attached to ornaments and elodea. Coincidence anyone?

My girl laid hers on the fake grass, tree, bridge, castle. They knocked off most of them by 3rd day morning! Had to pick them off the sand, probably 75% or more.

They also ate about 20 between the two...:(

I also wonder what Axol and Lotl consumed while alone at school. No late developers then with the sandy eggs? I'm at a loss. I had hoped to post but will halt for now.

I'm trying to breed my Axel's but have had no luck...temp is chilled, they have 50 + gallons to move about in..Not sure why?

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
