I am soon planning on getting an axolotl. I'm a newbie when it comes to owning them. I have a 20 gallon tank and was wondering if I should use a substrate? or not use anything? If I use a substrate what's safe and what isn't?

If your axolotl is under 5" go bare bottom as sand can cause impaction.

As an adult, sand or bare bottom is the way to go. Gravel is a big no no as they can cause impaction in their tummies. You can use rocks bigger than their heads but it can collect waste and food and will muck up water quality.

Thanks! I'm getting a juvenile, so I'll definitely be going bare bottom.
