Hi everyone,
I have a babie that has 4 gills instead of six, its very cute. Is this normal? I havent got a camera capable of taking a close enough picture. the babies are still very small! about 12 days old.

Elspeth.

It's not normal but will probably not effect the health of your axolotl. Someone posted on the forum recently of an axolotl with just two gills on one side and three on the other so it does happen but is quite unusual.

Regards Neil

Someone on here also has an axie with 4 on each side, so 8 all up. They are just genetic mutations, which are comon in axolotls because they have been so inbred to keep the breeding lines pure. The specific mutation you have is not common but mutations themselves are, they could effect anywhere on the body. Please post pictures of your special little one when you can :D

Hey,
8 gills? wow, how unique. I have a video but i dont know how to post it. and the photos arent that great. but ill see how i go.

I got some great photos now! look for the babie that looks like it has no eyes, kinda white-ish one.

you can get eyeless axolotls! that is a mutation which pops up sometimes.

Its often hard to find albinos eyes becayse they are white too, but your right that baby looks like it litterealy has none! Its hard to tell at this stage so keep an eye on it.

wow a 4 gilled eyeless axolotl? thats really cool

This made me giggle.

I know someone with an eyeless wildtype.
I also saw a picture of an axie with 4 gills on one side.
All those imperfections make them pretty cute.

When my albino had babies with her golden albino partner for a while I thought that maybe none of them had eyes because it was so hard to tell. After a while I realised this wasn't the case though and they were all in fact healthy, 'normal' looking axies, haha.

The four gills are cute :) it's so interesting the random mutations that can happen!
