Ok, I promised myself a week ago I would show off my 2 new babies. So, here they are . . .

We are still having some "naming issues" - I want to call them Statler and Waldorf after the 2 grumpy, cheeky old guys from the Muppets that sit in the balcony and make fun of everyone and generally complain about EVERYTHING. My partner wants to call them Salt 'n' Pepa after that dynamic hip-hoppin/rappin duo! (Don't get me wrong, I am quite a fan myself

)

And here are my teenagers, Lotle and Falkor. They grow up so fast! Heh heh

is falknor i think it is, a melanoid? i want one so much :p What kind of sand are you using? I really want white-ish sand -_-

Awsome, did you get Falkor from the never ending story movie? The name not the axie!lol

Great looking axies and tank. Can i suggest using your "macro" setting on your digital camera? it'll sharpen up your close ups

Wow jo!! Very nice. Unique colours on both!!

Im loving the 4th pic!! Where your melanoid has his head through the log.
"Peekaboo" !! =)))
Very cute!

Yes, Falkor (my Golden) is named such cause axolotls remind me of the Luck Dragon from Never Ending Story (what can I say, I grew up in the 80's). Lotle is the Melanoid and Falkor can't do much at all without Lotle being close behind (making sure there is no eating going on without her I think

) I love the pic with her head poking through the log too!!

I got the sand from my local hardware store, Bunnings Hardware House - Do they have Bunnings in N.Z? - The brand of it is "Tuscan Paths". They have a website, www.tuscanpaths.com I think!?! Maybe do a google search. It was pretty cheap but they only sell it in 1kg bags, about $2.20 each if I remember correctly. Both my tanks have this substrate now. I'm really pleased with it. I only had to rinse it 5-6 times and when I put it in the larger tank it settled within an hour and didn't cloud the water at all

.

Charlie, I am going to display my lack of knowledge on digi-cams now . . . where would I find the MACRO setting? I don't know if there is one on my camera - admittedly I haven't looked cause I know so little about what does what etc. I turn it on, and press the button

Please explain . . . I would love to be able to take clearer pictures!!

macro is generally indicated by a little flower i think (well it is on my camera which is a sony)

btw, they're gorgeous axies

yeah, the flower symbol is the usual symbol, on most sony's anyway. Others too I think (old fashioned canon I have was the same... as far as I remember.)
It can take longer to focus, but the autofocus comes out a lot sharper. Its for things about a foot or less away. Can get really close and zoom as well.
(might suggest a little tripod as well.)

It's a Kodak easy share . . . something. LOL Maybe I will have a play around with it and read the instructions

Thanks everyone!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
