any suggestions on the best "starter" caudates? i'm not an amature and have been studying caudates since i was a little girl (my parents nicknamed me newt at 2 months of age, i guess it was kind of ingrained in me as i grew). i'd like Ambystoma mavortium, and Taricha tarosa... not together.... lol. just wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

My first newt (and the kind I still keep to this day) was/is Taricha Granulosa. Love these little guys. Mine have seemed to be very tough because through the first year or so they went through some hellish conditions and made it out just fine.

i love T. tarosa.... their coloring reminds me of the red squirrels we have out in our woods. the brownish upper with the orangish under. lol, they're cute

Other good starter caudates are: Japanese firebelly (Cynops pyrrhogaster), axolotl, ribbed newt (Pleurodeles waltl) and Ambystomas (tiger, spotted or marbled sals). Would you prefer maintaining an aquarium setup or a terrarium?

i think a terrarium would be easier, but an aquarium would be more amusing to watch. so maybe one of each.

i've debated going out and catching me a few A. maculatum in the swampy area out in our woods, but i dont know if they'd like moving indoors...
