Hi,

Sorry dumb question, is 304 or 316 stainless steel safe around newts?

I have lake urnia newts that are very adventurous. Or just heck bent on escaping and exploring.

I have tried glass aquariums with tight fit screen lids, they seem to be able to wiggle through the corners, tried acrylic aquarium with a light system, they scaled the walls and climbed into the light( noticed and saved them before turning it on and frying him) tried putting obstacles on the wall like a moss shelf, welding acrylic rods to act like speed bumps and having a pump spray the walls to make them slick so they couldn't climb.

My next thought is to put hinges in and attach stainless steel micro mesh to completely cover all openings but before doing that figured I would ask if anyone has any less drastic suggestions or if they have used stainless steel and seen if it can cause health problems.

Thanks for any info

micro mesh even if made with marine grade stainless will corrode over time due to the moisture and how fine the mesh is, plastic mesh that is normally used for door screens would be a more cheaper and durable option.

Good quality stainless should not corrode. I have seen some eating utensils claim stainless corrode, rust. Its either plated or contains iron. The screen used for windows, I've seen it deteriate and or break down under moist environments. Not to mention its more than likely fiberglass that contains very fine strands. Ever felt itch after handling insulation? Can't imagine those tiny fibers being good for any salamander. I think you would be better off using a good high nickel content stainless. Just make sure none of the edges are exposed. The tiny wire more than likely stab your little guys. Maybe you could coat the edges with aquarium safe 100% silicone?
