As of lately i've been really unhappy with my hanging filter since it's creating so much water movement. I have a 29 gallon tank and i'm wondering if sponge filters are okay all by themselves in a larger aquarium. Also, would moss balls do any good in my aquarium if i wanted to do only a sponge filter?

Sponge filters are great in smaller tanks & will give you beautiful fluffy gills :)

You may need to keep an eye on testing the water - I find I do a 20% change every few days (some comes out with the baster & poops) & mine has Anubia on driftwood some java moss & a java fern...

So would you recommend one for a 29 gal?

sponge filters are great for any size aquarium. They contain a ton of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. You just have to clean out debris and waste yourself as there is no mechanical filtration on them.

I have two sponge filters each with an airstone in for oxygen/cleaning purposes.

At the moment there is one in each tank, but when they all go to the 3" tank, i will put both in it.

I think theyre great as they create oxygen and make my axies gills beautiful.

The only thing is the water level needs to be over the whole of the sponge ideally else it can be a little noisy as the water glugs about

I use them in all 3 of my tanks. I was running 2 little ones for a 10 gal in my 29 gal tank and it wasn't quite getting the job done. I switched them out (1 at a time a few days apart to help cycle) with 2 larger blue ones meant for a 40 gal. With 80 gallons worth of filter and only 29 gallons of water the clarity and quality is great.

I have two in my tank, one that barely causes any water disturbance and one that is quite powerful, I found that attaching a spray bar to it tones it down a bit and my Axi loves it, it's a but like a steady waterfall. And his gills have become lovely and fluffy too.

I have sponge filters in my 29 tall and 20 long, they do a great job. 20% water change weekly keeps water chemistry perfect. I have a Fluval 405 on my 55 gallon with a spray bar, and an additional PVC pipe with tons of holes drilled into it over the spray bar which totally stunts the current.

I have one of each, sponge and hanging filter. Sponge filters do seem to suit axies more, he spends a lot more time swimming around the sponge filter.

That's what i have and it seems to be working quite well. I actually really like the sponge filter. And i would have to agree, they do seem to suit axies more, my one axolotl loved sitting by the sponge filter.

Which sponge filter do you all use, what brand?

mine are just cheap-ish ones off ebay

I used something similar to the Hydro(more easily found here) in my 90.
There is an aquarium store near me run by an awesome asian couple and they import a lot of asian products. I attached a pic though.

On my smaller tanks I use something almost exactly like this two sponge filter.
You can alter these too.

You can also VERY easily make square sponge filters yourself, just not really worth it if you only need one haha

Me too! Maybe I'll pick one of those up...

I use only a sponge filter in my 30 gallon tank and have never had an issue related to it.

I have a diy sponge filter made out of a 1/2" pvc pipe and an airstone with lots of sponge on it. Works the same as a regular sponge filter but it has a lot more sponge for more filtration.
That being said I also have a diy canister filter on it, and a diy bio bottle filter on it. It's a 50 gallon tank.

Nikki,
How is your filter set up? Yours looks like its blowing bubbles is it connected to your air pump? So what have you go it connected to, to filter it?
I have one simular in one of my tanks but I used the clear thick tube which came with it and ran it to my canister filter but if there is another way which is easier I would like to know how.

Thanks

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
