Hi all! I am currently in the process of cycling a tank for my future axolotls. After adding the sponge filter, it began to make an awful intermittent "gurgling" sound. I removed the L-shaped plastic tube, and the noise ceased. Stupid question, but does anyone know if this would be at all detrimental to the ability of the filter to work effectively?

The tube you could be talking about is designed channel the air and create suction for the sponge, so removing it might reduce the efficiency. I had a sponge filter that made that awful gurgling sound, so I can relate. I replaced it soon after I got it.

I get mine from ebay. The ones I linked work properly without making that noise.

Thanks! I'll check it out!

The gurgling may because your air pump isnt powerful enough to pull the water right up and out of the tube properly, have you tried tilting the sponge filter or using a stronger air pump?
Silly question, but did you ensure the water was covering all of the sponge filter except the very top where the water comes out?

The air pump is rated at 40 gallons, and the sponge is fully submerged. I can't figure out why, but after leaving the pump/filter on for roughly an hour the noise became consistent albeit noisy.. go figure haha
