I am buying 2 sponge filters for my new 20 gallon tank for the Axolotl. I plan to eventually upgrade the pair to a 40 long when I move out, However I misread the site and the air pump I bought is only rated 20 gallons.

I am just wondering if a 20 gallon air pump is ok for a 40 long tank running 2 sponge filters. If not I can certainly upgrade eventually.

I've never heard of a 40-long; how deep is that tank?

The power needed from an air pump depends on (1) the depth of the water and (2) how much air flow you need. If the larger tank is the same depth, and you are running the same number/type of sponge filters, then the same air pump should do the job.

40 long is a 4 ft tank, 12 inches wide and 12 inches high. The 20 gallon I am getting is 2 ft long , 12 inches wide and 16 inches high.
