Sponge filter for cycling?

I have a 20 gallon tank with a sponge filter set up and ready for cycling. Will the sponge filter move the water enough to cycle it? When I tried a few months ago, the levels of ammonia never dropped, so I'm wondering if I need something more than the sponge filter to cycle the tank.

Sponge filter are great as they have so much surface area, id just check to make sure that you have the right sized sponge, if its too small for the tank volumes, then it would take ages to cycle.
However saying that a cycle can vary anyway some people do it in day (using media from a cycled tank) others take months on end.
