I am new to the forum, and I was just wondering if I could get some help on selecting a salamander. This is not my first salamander, as I have had a paddletail newt for about a year now in a 10 gallon, but I recently purchased a 29 gallon tank after recieving a tetrafauna viquarium as a gift. I would like to use this viquarium for a salamander/newt. The viquarium makes a 55/45 water to land split, so which kind of salamander would this be an ideal setup for?? I am mainly concerned on the water to land ratio, because if I know which species would be good in this set up, I will make the rest of the tank ideal to its needs. Any imput is helpful to me!! Thanks

Since no-one has answered yet I will give it a go.

I know of a few salamanders for which this would be OK, but to be honest I think a newt may be happier?

Chinese fire bellies (H. orientalis) and chinese warty (P. chinensis) are very easy to keep, but your land area would be useless as they rarely leave the water in my experience.

Japanese fire bellies (H. pyrrhogaster), himalayan crocodile newts (T. verrucosus) may use the land area more. There are of course many of the Triturus genus (italian crested, danube crested, marbled, etc) will also use both land and water areas.

However, the Tylototriton salamanders (I believe) tend to use more land area than water, or 50/50 (with the exception of T. verrucosus which in my experience uses water more than land for most of the year).

As for many other salamander species I do not think they would use their land areas very much at all.

I hope others can agree with or correct me, or add to your potential species list.

Good luck

Thank you!! Now I just have to find a way to purchase them....

Watch the advertisement section here. You'll be much better off purchasing captive bred animals. They're much healthier than wild-caught.

Would Desmognathus auriculatus be suitable for this environment?? I have added moss to the land area.
