I have a spare 7.4 gallon (12" x 12" x 12" approximately (I think it's taller)); I was wondering what could be recommended to go in.

I have three chinese fire bellied newts at the minute.

I'm just about to start cycling so I'm in no rush at deciding what to put in.

(suggestions don't need to be newt based by the way)

My ideas so far are:

1) a single betta
2) shrimp only

Cherry shrimp would do very well in a tank that size. You could keep a big colony.

As of now I don't have any (live) shrimp but I love both of my Betta splendid. You would be surprised how much personality these fish have. I've even taught mine to hop out of the water for brine shrimp treats! They come in so many different species and colors and you could really spice up any room with a cherry red butterfly crown tail Betta! ;) One male or female Betta splendid would do great in a tank that size, just don't try to house them together!

I have a betta at present, and I've had shrimp lol.
