Hi everybody:D I just saw some nice little newts called Spanish ribbed newts,I have fire bellied newts and I thought they make good tank mates but I want to consult you guys before I do anything drastic.I'm probably wrong but I didn't find anything in the species mixing disasters.

No, it won't work. Spanish ribbed newts will most definitely try and eat the smaller C. orientalis.

they seemed quite small in the tank but I guess they might of been young. Is there any other speices i could have confused them with?

P.waltl are most definitely not small(in the wild they can reach 30cm) and a very bad choice for a mix. They are bottomless pits of hunger, i have no doubt they would bite or try to eat the smaller Cynops. They are peaceful newts, but feeding frenzy respects nothing.

I can´t think of any other species you could confuse them with...they are very distinct. At most they could have been P.poireti, which are smaler, but uncommon in the trade, so i doubt it.

they look a lot like what I saw except WAY bigger

So is there any newts that can go with cfbn?

I would advise you to just go with more Cynops orientalis. Maybe you'd get lucky and get some breeding out of them, which to me is far more rewarding than just another pretty newt in the tank.

Justin is right, if you want more newts, just breed the ones you have. Besides size issues, Chinese firebelly newts and Ribbed newts also could introduce new diseases to each other resulting in one or both species dieing. Mixing species in never really a good idea.
