Hi,

So I inherited an axolotl off a friend a few years ago, it was severely malnourished and wasn’t fed correctly, incorrectly housed etc. I’ve done my best to care for her but I’m by no means an expert in axolotls and so I’m learning as I go. I try and follow all advice I come across, but there’s so much info out there!

Everything was fine with my axolotl, she had a huge appetite etc until about a year ago where she just stopped eating. She didn’t eat for months and months and I was sure she was gonna die, but she didn’t and she slowly got an appetite back. Generally she eats every other day - although I offer her food every day just incase.
So - the last few weeks I’ve noticed that the skin next to her legs has gone funny - like it looks like it’s just peeling off. I make sure the water is at the right temperature and perimeters (I have the water testing kit), I cycle the water, I have a filter but make sure that there’s very little flow into the tank etc... I haven’t changed anything in her tank that would cause this - I have no idea what’s causing it! Please help.

Unfortunately I don't have a definite answer, I suggest you copy this post into the 'axolotl - sick' category on the forum with this picture. What are your water parameters? How much and how often do you cycle the water? I'm sending the link to a similar thread, you can try to buy a water conditioner with a skin treatment in it (just google it first to make sure it's safe for axies as well as fish) but it won't stop the original cause, just temporarily fix the issue. Helpppp, my axolotl skin peeling off!

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
