These days we prefer the term plus-sized.
She gets around just fine! She is about 2 years
old and still growing.

Also, just wondering would you suggest the
Slimfast powder or the bars??

Cruel is when people use these for bait.

John S., would it be OK with you if I use one of your photos on Caudata Culture?

Sure,I'd be flattered Jennifer
I might even have some better ones for you if
you like.

How on earth did you get it to be THAT big? I have my tiger for a bit over a year now.... and while i over feed it, it is NEVER that big.

She was always a big eater..she just loves to
eat!!! I remember shortly after I got her
she was in a small tank that was next to
another tank..and she was pacing trying to
catch the crickets that were in the other tank.

Are you sure you didn't accidently slip a few big macs in with those crickets?

What precisely are you feeding her? It's rather difficult to make a salamander put on considerable fat deposits unless you use the wrong kind of foods. Impressive animal though.

That would be really funny if all he fed her were those newt pellets.

yeah, to put in the morbidly obese category.

Some of you are coming across as kind of rude..

Anyway John is away for a few days..As far as I know he feeds his Tigers crickets, worms (i think waxworms, earthworms and maybe superworms occasionally??) and some pinkies..maybe other bugs if he finds them in the yard..

This particular tiger has been cut off of pinkies for a while she is not quite as big these days.

Also most of his Tigers are Much Smaller
He does have another big one but she is quite
old I think..

You should let John know that feeding amphibians with mammalian meat is a sure fire way of making them fat. They can't digest pinkies correctly (it's not a natural food for a salamander) and they end up getting fat. As soon as I saw the photos I immediately thought of pinkies, hence my original question about what John is feeding her.

It'll take a long time for those fat deposits to decrease, provided you never feed her pinkies again.

I have kept tiger salamanders on and off for a few years and I fed them as much as they would eat of worms, crickets and waxmoth larvae. They never developed fat jowls like this large lady.

To Chris: I too wasn't pleased with your comment. Please try to be helpful, not rude, in future.

Perhaps a combination with a hormone disorder can develop such massive fat like deposits. If animals are from the same batch and fed more or less the same way it is strange that one grows much more and fat than the others.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
