Hi there I am new to this site and also to the world of amphibians. I have recently fallen in love and housed two male paddletail newts. There were both in the same aquarium, however the slightly larger of the 2 became very territorial in a matter of days and then began snapping at the smaller newt. He would actually follow the smaller one around and chomp on him. It was then decided that I should separate them into their own aquariums.
They now have their own 2 foot aquariums...the bigger of the 2 has taken to his own space fantastically and is swimming around and playing etc. The smaller of the 2 however does not seem as happy. He just seems to sit in the corner or the aquarium all day and night. I am wondering if something is wrong with him? Or if he will just take time to adjust? He doesn't seem interested in eating etc. I currently have 2 hidey holes for him to hide in etc but I am considering buying some more....perhaps hes just a very shy and timid newt?
I have checked him for any wounds etc after the snapping but can see nothing. I am worried in-case he is not happy or not very well though.
Can anyone offer and advice etc to me? As I am at a loss and would be devastated if he didn't over come this. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
