A few months back I bought some young Chinens fire bellied newts. At the time, it appeared that I had purchased two males and three females, due to the size of the "pouch" and the broader, rounded shorter tails on the males. (and one of them actually had little hairs coming out of the back) I've been chilling the water and adjusting the photo periods to mimic the changing seasons, doing regular water changes, and allowed the temps to rise. But still, I have seen no breeding behavior. My males seem to still be in breeding condition, but its the "females" that trouble me.

They are nearly an inch and a half longer than their "male" friends and have developed a distinctive bulging at the base of their skull. combine that with their overall more Redish appearance and bumpy skin, and i become QUITE confused. did i end up buying Japanese fire bellies that i thought were female chinese?

pictures to follow.

It's certainly possible they could be different species. Without photos though it's hard to say.
