Well its been over a week and so far i have not had a single baby die (knock on wood). I was expecting to have alot of casualties but at this rate I'm going to have alot of axies that will need a home at some stage. Any suggestions? A few of my local aquariums are happy to take some off my hands which is good but we havent discussed how many and I've roughly counted 150ish. So I could be in for setting up a few more tanks lol. If my babies continue to grow happily without too many speed humps I'm going to post a guide of what i did from eggs hatching to when they are a managable size. So many problems i ran into that i seem to have rectified that i will include in the guide.......photos up soon :D

I'm raising my first batch of babies as well, they're about 3-4 weeks old. The are developing slower than I expected (possibly because of issues I had with food at the start?) but I havent had any casualties either. I expected it to be a lot worse but they are completely fine all hanging out together.

Makes me wonder, yellowpebble mentioned something in another thread along the lines of some babies not having strong cannibalistic tendencies and it can just depend.
So maybe we have just been lucky with ours?

Cannabalism can be reduced by low stocking densities and regular feeding.

and having lots of plants. My big axolotls (the parents) have never been agressive towards each other, and have never eaten their eggs. They eggs will sit there and hatch after a few weeks without any intrest from the parents, even when it has been a few days without feeding. Its might just depend on the axolotls.

Also, different colours have different levels of aggression. Wild type larvae are notoriously more agressive than albinos or melanoids.

I'm also on my first lot, and about 2-3 weeks in. I have 300ish and lots of people helping do the water changes. Mine are growing slowly as well, some have just tiny limb buds and some dont just yet. I first used daphnia but I'm changing to BBS because I've had food problems too. I will be using super small chopped up bloodworm until the BBS arrives. I've only lost a few babies but because we hatched majority of them by hand and knife they didnt eat for a little while. They are all in tubs of 2-5 and a couple of a bit more but theyre pretty evenly spread out.

From what I've witnessed the cannibalism doesn't really begin until week 5-7, so be prepared.

Do you mind me asking why you cut them out of the egg membrane? They normally have no problem hatching on their own when they're ready. Usually the ones that don't break free on their own are the ones that aren't meant to make it anyways (too weak, deformed etc..).

Lol also a different guide would be fine. And because it had been 2 weeks after the first ones hatched.
