A 50 gal tank needs a filter rated at 200GPH - I would get a smaller filter.

Most filters can be adjusted to control the outflow. If you can't adjust outflow, you can put decorations right in front of the filter to break up the flow.

Yeah if you just place some filter floss in front of the outflow using a rubber band or wire tie that will do a good job of dispersing the flow.

Over filtering is a very good thing.

This is good information.
I have a plan (I'm a vivarium builder) to make a nice island for dispersing flow.

How do I know if my flow is too strong?

It's only too strong if your axolotls are flying around the tank with no control!
Haha, I don't know my axolotl goes into the waterfall from the HOB filter pretty often and seems to really enjoy it, I guess all axolotls are different. It should be fine just point the outflow at something.

Some axolotls will turn their gills forward when stressed from water current.

I didn't feel like making an entire post about this because it's a simple question and about a filter I have so I figured I'd throw it in here to try to get an answer;
I recently purchased a Fluval U3 filter off of craigslist, the guy said he hadn't used it in a long time. I brought it home and started cleaning it and the sponges and carbon pads were completely deteriorated so I tossed them, I cleaned out the filter itself and the impeller, then checked out the biomax ceramic media that goes in the middle cartridge. It was all brown as it had been used and whatnot, I kept it in there for now and have been running it in a big container to try to get all the grossness out of it.
My question is should I replace the biomax since it's got old dead bacteria on it or will it pick up new bacteria and work just the same?

I would keep it. Dead bacteria turn into food for live bacteria. And there's a possibility that some are in a dormant state and will speed up your cycling when you add water.

Oh awesome. There's room for more in there, it's only about half full, should I get some new media and fill it up the rest of the way?
