Question: Snails ok or get rid?

they're probably pond snails, they shouldn't be a problem. But they will reproduce faster than rabbits.

I had the same 'problem', I bought plants from a local aquarium shop and they turned out to have snail eggs on, i see them on the glass sometimes. I usually suck any up with my turkey baster but are they any harm? Or do they do any good?

If you end up with loads of snails in your tank the general tank owner theory is that you are over feeding the fish which is giving the snails food to live on. This would mean they would breed rapidly, if you have only a few then they dont really do any harm. If you are concerned about them you could purchase a couple of assassin snails to eat them, but my husband discovered recently, having been told they wont breed in his tank because the temperature wasnt correct, he has found at least twelve babies, hmmmm, fight snails with snails?? On a good note, they do clean up algae and some waste food. ;)

And another thing, you can sell assassin snails to aquarium shops so thats not a bad thing is it??

i like snails in my tank, the problem is i fear one of my axies will eat the whole thing, shell and all, and become impacted. in fact, thats one of my main theories on how reynolds died. he ate a snail and became impacted.

but they clean, and frankly, i like the idea of other animals in my tank. but i wont compromise the health of my axies.

if it were an apple snail it might be possible for an axolotl to become impacted from it, but pond snail shells are actually pretty delicate. I was trying to pick some snails out of my ten gallon, and I accidentally killed the majority of them just by grabbing them with my fingers and crushing their shells. So if it was a pond snail I would be doubtful of pond snail ingestion causing any major damage.

i do have a lake snail, which i caught, that literally live in the sand (you only see the top of the shell in the sand) thats in my other aquarium ( no salamanders in there..)

Cool!! That looks more like a tiger than a zebra!! I want one!! ;)

right? they are cool. and they actually help and function in the tank! the problem is their shells are super hard, and they are smallish. so i wouldnt advise it in an axolotl tank.

I used to get snails in my axolotl tank, but my lot will eat them. These where regular aquarium snails however. I personally would not worry about them unless they grow too big.

the majority of pond snails live on algae, most of the time it's so thin you can't even see it. So it's probably not an over feeding issue. The algae is beneficial to the water parameters, but other than that, they should be fine, its just aesthetics.
