Smooth newts in captivity

You would just need a cool woodland type terrarium with a small water bowl for most of the year and a weedy aquarium for their breeding season.
I have heard of people keeping them aquatic all year, but in my experience the adults and juveniles are very hydrophobic outside the breeding season, so I don't think forcing them to stay in the water would do them much good.

In my experience this is all too true. I had a 2:2 group and they were incredibly unhappy when I tried to keep them aquatic. I would imagine it does little to benefit their natural breeding cycle as well.
