I knew that Smooth newts seek out land after the mating period is over, this happened here 2 days ago. They suddenly left the water and hid among the leaves and under wood on the land area. Which is perfectly fine, but I haven't seen them leave from underneath the wood where they seem to have hidden. I'm glad they found a cozy spot to hide. On the other hand I'm sometimes fighting the urge to check on them because I want to know if they are fine.
I do see the male peeking out from time to time.
How do you all cope with this situation? Just let them be? Will they come out of hiding when they need to feed? Or should I drop in some chopped up worms every now and then?
