Hi I would like to hear your views on what is the smallest acceptable size for a terrarium !

For an example I have 2 Tylototriton verrucosus in a 12" x 8" x 8" an I also have 3 Triturus marmoratus in a similar size set up they are healthy and seem happy, anything smaller would be unacceptable !

I believe the health and well being of the amphibian is vital and the size of the terrarium will obviously affect this, my Tylototriton verrucosus wonder round occasionally and dont really need much space, whereas I have Taricha torosa these are space lovers and cover every inch !

It really depends on the size of the newts and whether they're terrestrial or aquatic. Terrestrial newts require less space generally, especially if the furnishings are appropriate and allow for hiding/exploring. Aquatic newts require much larger enclosures because a healthy aquatic environment is difficult to maintain if the water volume is low.

Personally I would say that a 12 inch tank is too small to house adults of the two species you mention. Both attain 5-6 inches in length when fully grown so it would be rather unfair to house them in such a small space. An aquarium 2ft long or bigger would be more appropriate.

The 2 Tylototriton verrucosus are about 4" in length and are almost completely terrestrial occasionally they wonder out for food and the odd dip in the water , but prefer to hide in the crevices ! The 3 Triturus marmoratus are still quite small and will be moving to a much larger set up after winter !

My Taricha torosa are in a large set up so they have nothing to worry about.

Is there a chart (or such like) as a guide to what is acceptable housing for each species ? I know there are similar guides for fish ...perhaps this could be something members could work on ?
