Hi I live on the east coast of Australia and purchased my first axalotl 3mths ago for my little girl. The pet store owner assured m e that they were easy to care for and I wouldn't have any problems as long I kept him cool on warm days with ice cubes in the water.
Well after much research which I should have done in the first place, I find out that they are not that easy to care for. Now I have fallen for my ribbon in a big way, he has a cheeky personality and will let me hand feed him.
4 days ago he started to float so I took him out put him in a small container so he could get to the bottom and contacted my local aquarium, I got tests for his water which is fine and a thermometer for his tank. It turns out his water was 23 deg C which I know is to hot so got a mesh lid on the tank with a fan and with no filter it sits at 20 with the filter 21-22deg so I now have a relay team of ice bricks in his tank temp currently at 19 deg.
I was only feeding him pellets which he seemed to enjoy, I was only feeding him twice a day 2 pellets each feed hence why he is skinny. So 2 days ago I got some frozen beef and prawn, dug up some garden worms of which he ate 4 in 10 mins and caught him some tadpoles.
I have cleaned out his tank checked water again and have not been able to get him to eat since the worms. ( is he full ???)
In the last hour he has gone to the bottom a few times and is currently head Down bum up. There are 3 tadpoles in with him but he is not interested nor has he eaten any beef and prawn.
Any comments, suggestions or hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.
