We have had our fire belly newts for about 8 years. The female has what looks to be a hole on her side. Can't tell if its a wound parasite or? They both look a little "shiny" to us. She looked gravid for a while. She has had eggs twice over the years and we've managed to hatch some it we catch her laying them. This time I think she ate them. Anyway I'd like to find out if this spot/wound/??? is of concern. Hoping I can figure out how to upload a picture of it.

Hi!

you should try to make a better picture of her because with this one i can't tell what that hole looks like...:(

anyway, my advice is put her out of the water, in a small tank, with some wet paper as bottom and a small refuge. keep the tank clean, and change the bottom every time she poop. remember also to keep her skin humid. usually, when they have skin problems, this is a great solution. always worked for me.

the only problem is that newts may stop eating if put out of water. if she does this, just keep her like this as long as she doesn't start to lose weight, and always try to feed her, maybe with live food if you can.

if you can keep her out of water for a week or two, the wound should start to heal...

I can't see it clearly on your picture, but if you say it looks like a hole than you should keep in mind that it's a bacterial infection. If that's so, the spot will grow bigger as if the flesh around it is being eaten. This will get worse regardless of the fact if you keep it in the water or on land. You will need antibiotics then and there's no guarantee that it will work. I need a better picture though. Until know I would follow the advice which Die gave you. Offer your animals live bloodworms or tubifex on a piece of wet paper towel.
