So I think from doing a quick search, one of my newts has some skin sores. I just noticed them today as he was hobbling around the tank. I have 4 newts in a 20 gallon long and the other 3 seem fine. I have had them for about a month in a cycled tank. Water temp is 66.6 degrees.

Some things I had read was to do salt baths and use neosporin on the affected newt. I read through the instructions on how to do the salt bath, but when would I apply the neosporin? Would those be appropriate treatments for what is seen in the picture below?

Thanks in advance!

I applied it two or three times a day when I used it, although I'm not sure it would work on something as advanced as that.

Okay, so what should I do first? I get the impression that odds are not good for this newt, but I want to at least try what I can or what might help. Suggestions?

I would isolate it in a smallish escape proof but ventilated container or tank with moist paper towel for substrate and just apply the neosporin(w/o pain killers) to the newt like that. And I think salt baths are only done for fungal infections, but I could be wrong I guess.

Thanks. This may be a stupid question but I am still learning. Should there be any water in the container along with the moist paper towels or would that just wash the neosporin off?

It would probably wash it off, just keep the paper towels moist but not drenched in water either.

I currently have a newt with a sore also, not as advanced as that though. I am treating it with Neosporin ( without painkillers ) and it seems to be getting better.
Like Aaron says, isolate him in a small area so that he can easily be monitored. Paper towel substrate works fine, but you don't want any free flowing or standing water, just keep the paper towel moist. I have mine in a old sour cream container with holes in the lid and a hide. You want to minimize stress on the animals as little as possible. Apply just enough Neosporin to cover the effected area once daily. You can continue to offer food but if he doesn't accept it then just leave him be, and don't offer food too often.
Salt baths can be used as well. This thread might give you some more info. http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...lp/94263-c-pyrrhogaster-illness-sickness.html
I hope he recovers! -Seth
